Rowdy Tellez
Rowdy Tellez Joins Seattle
Thu, Feb 20, 2025, 10:53 PM
Tellez signed a minor-league deal with the Mariners on Thursday that includes an invitation to spring training, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports.
Analysis: Tellez had a disappointing 2024 season with the Pirates when he posted only a .691 OPS across 421 plate appearances -- his second consecutive campaign with an OPS under .700. His fit on Seattle's roster is unclear given that both he and Luke Raley bat from the left side, though Tellez could also get some at-bats at designated hitter if he manages to crack the roster.
Jorge Polanco
Jorge Polanco Takes swings in batting practice
Wed, Feb 19, 2025, 1:18 PM
Polanco (knee) was spotted taking swings off a pitching machine during Wednesday's full-squad workout, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports.
Analysis: Polanco is heading into his second season in Seattle after he re-signed with the Mariners in late January on a one-year, $7.75 million deal that includes a $6 million mutual option for 2026. The 31-year-old endured a rough debut season in Seattle, slashing .213/.296/.355 while striking out in a career-worst 29.2 percent of his 469 plate appearances. He was limited to 118 games due to hamstring and knee injuries and needed surgery in October to repair damage to the patellar tendon of his left knee, but reports earlier in the offseason suggested that he would be fully cleared for baseball activities by January. Polanco seems to have recovered as anticipated and isn't operating with any reported restrictions in the first week of camp, but like many veteran players, he may not be immediately rushed into game action when the Mariners open their Cactus League schedule Friday. In addition to easing himself back from the injury, Polanco will also be adjusting to a position change this spring. In an effort to keep him healthier this season, the Mariners will move Polanco to third base after he played exclusively in the field at second base in 2024.
Donovan Solano
Donovan Solano Not yet at camp
Tue, Feb 18, 2025, 5:28 PM
Solano has yet to report to spring camp due to visa issues, though the team hopes he will arrive by Friday, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports.
Analysis: The Mariners' Cactus League schedule begins Friday, so Solano should still be available for Seattle's entire slate of exhibition games as long as he arrives by then. The 37-year-old slashed .286/.343/.417 with eight homers and 35 RBI across 309 regular-season plate appearances with the Padres last year, and he's expected to begin 2025 in the short side of a platoon at first base with Luke Raley.
Luis Castillo
Luis Castillo Throws side session Monday
Mon, Feb 17, 2025, 12:36 PM
Castillo (hamstring) tossed a bullpen session Monday, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports.
Analysis: Castillo finished last season on the injured list after sustaining a Grade 2 left hamstring strain during his final start Sept. 8, but he appears to be facing no restrictions in the early stages of spring training. The Mariners will once again be looking to Castillo to serve as a workhorse at the top of the rotation after he made at least 30 starts in both of his first two full seasons in Seattle. Before he was shut down with the hamstring injury, Castillo went 11-12 and turned in a 3.64 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 175:47 K:BB across 175.1 innings.
Jackson Kowar
Jackson Kowar Completes bullpen session
Mon, Feb 17, 2025, 12:32 PM
Kowar (elbow) threw a bullpen session Monday, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports.
Analysis: Kowar will likely open the season on the injured list, but the right-hander looks to be nearing the finish line in his recovery from Tommy John surgery, which he underwent last March. He'll presumably remain limited to throwing bullpen sessions and playing catch in the early weeks of spring training, but he could be ready to face hitters in live batting practice before the end of camp. Kowar has a minor-league option remaining, so the Mariners could choose to send him to Triple-A Tacoma once he's fully recovered from surgery if the big club doesn't have a spot available for him in its bullpen.
Matt Brash
Matt Brash Throwing bullpen Saturday
Sat, Feb 15, 2025, 9:51 AM
Brash (elbow) will throw a light bullpen session Saturday, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports.
Analysis: Saturday will mark the first time Brash has thrown off a mound since he underwent an internal brace procedure on his right elbow last May. He's not expected to be ready for regular-season action until mid-April at the earliest, but a return to mound work is still an encouraging sign.
Troy Taylor
Troy Taylor Cleared to throw
Fri, Feb 14, 2025, 4:18 PM
Taylor (lat) was cleared to resume throwing Friday, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports.
Analysis: Taylor suffered a right lat strain in late January during his offseason throwing program, but he has already been given the green light to begin his rehab. It's unclear how quickly the Mariners will try to bring him back, but the 23-year-old reliever may be able to return in time to pitch in some Cactus League games.
Jhonathan Diaz
Jhonathan Diaz Joins camp as NRI
Wed, Feb 12, 2025, 12:58 PM
Diaz agreed Wednesday with the Mariners on a minor-league contract that includes an invitation to spring training, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports.
Analysis: Seattle removed Diaz from its 40-man roster earlier this month, and after he elected free agency upon clearing waivers, the 28-year-old will now rejoin the Mariners for the start of spring training. He'll presumably get the opportunity to compete for a spot in the Opening Day bullpen as a long reliever. The Mariners boast a talented rotation that has all five members healthy heading into spring training, but Diaz's prior big-league starting experience could put him high on the list for spot starts if injuries in the rotation stack up at any point. He made five appearances (one start) for Seattle in 2024, covering 9.2 innings and allowing five earned runs on 14 hits and three walks while striking out eight.
Cade Marlowe
Cade Marlowe Outrighted to Triple-A
Fri, Feb 7, 2025, 5:26 PM
Marlowe was outrighted to Triple-A Tacoma on Friday after clearing waivers.
Analysis: Marlowe was DFA'd by the Mariners this past Monday in order to make room on the 40-man roster for Jorge Polanco (knee). Marlowe wasn't claimed off waivers, so he'll remain in Seattle's organization and will head to Triple-A for the start of the 2025 campaign. He spent most of the 2024 season with Tacoma, where he slashed .235/.341/.395 with 43 stolen bases, 13 home runs and 45 RBI over 411 plate appearances.
Gregory Santos
Gregory Santos Healthy ahead of spring training
Mon, Feb 3, 2025, 4:44 PM
Mariners president of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto said Monday that Santos has already reported to the team's spring training complex and has been throwing bullpen sessions, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports.
Analysis: Santos made only eight appearances for Seattle in 2024 due to multiple arm issues, but he finished the season healthy and will head into spring training without limitations. The 25-year-old can be a key member of the Mariners' bullpen if he can stay on the bump, but he's a major health risk.
Matt Brash
Matt Brash Aiming for April debut
Mon, Feb 3, 2025, 4:38 PM
Mariners president of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto said Monday that Brash (elbow) should be ready for the start of spring training and a season debut in the third week of April is the best-case scenario for the reliever, Shannon Drayer of SeattleSports.com reports.
Analysis: While everything with Brash's recovery from last May's internal brace procedure has come along swimmingly, Dipoto acknowledged the uncertainty with how the righty will respond to throwing in Cactus League games. Brash will begin the season on the injured list either way, but the hope is that the stint will be a short one. The 26-year-old boasts a career 31.9 percent strikeout rate and will be in line for high-leverage relief work once he's ready.
Troy Taylor
Troy Taylor Suffers lat strain
Mon, Feb 3, 2025, 4:32 PM
Taylor will not be ready for the start of spring training after suffering a right lat strain last week during his offseason throwing program, Shannon Drayer of SeattleSports.com reports.
Analysis: Given the nature of the injury and how recent it was, it's possible Taylor's readiness for Opening Day is in question. However, more should be known about a potential timetable deeper into spring training. Taylor looked good in 21 appearances out of the Mariners' bullpen in 2024, posting a 3.72 ERA and 25:7 K:BB over 19.1 innings.
Jhonathan Diaz
Jhonathan Diaz Removed from 40-man roster
Mon, Feb 3, 2025, 2:03 PM
The Mariners designated Diaz for assignment Monday.
Analysis: The transaction clears a spot on the 40-man roster for the addition of Casey Legumina. Diaz, 28, has been unimpressive over parts of four big-league seasons, compiling a 4.80 ERA and 32:27 K:BB across 45 innings. He should stand a good chance of passing through waivers unclaimed.
Casey Legumina
Casey Legumina Shipped to Seattle
Mon, Feb 3, 2025, 2:00 PM
The Mariners acquired Legumina from the Reds on Monday in exchange for cash considerations.
Analysis: Legumina had been designated for assignment and will now join a new 40-man roster. The 27-year-old reliever holds a 6.95 ERA and 18:11 K:BB across 22 innings covering parts of two seasons at the major-league level.
Cade Marlowe
Cade Marlowe Scrubbed from 40-man roster
Mon, Feb 3, 2025, 1:40 PM
The Mariners designated Marlowe for assignment Monday, Adam Jude of the Seattle Times reports.
Analysis: Seattle needed to free up a spot on its 40-man roster for the addition of Jorge Polanco (knee). Marlowe, 27, has slashed .240/.330/.406 with three homers and four steals over 109 plate appearances at the major-league level over the last two seasons. He could draw some interest on waivers.
Jorge Polanco
Jorge Polanco Back with Seattle
Thu, Jan 30, 2025, 6:59 PM
Polanco (knee) signed a one-year, $7.75 million contract with the Mariners on Thursday, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Polanco spent the 2024 season with the Mariners and suffered a down year, during which he hit just .213 with a 29.2 percent strikeout rate across 469 plate appearances. However, he played through a knee injury for a significant portion of the season, an issue that has since been corrected. Seattle reportedly plans to play Polanco primarily at third base, likely setting up Dylan Moore to be the team's primary second baseman as the roster currently stands.
Luis Castillo
Luis Castillo Nets NRI deal from Seattle
Tue, Jan 28, 2025, 1:38 PM
The Mariners signed Castillo to a minor-league contract Tuesday that includes an invitation to spring training, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports.
Analysis: Not to be confused with the other Castillo of the same name, this Castillo spent the previous two seasons in Japan pitching for the Chiba Lotte Marines and then Orix Buffaloes. The reliever made three appearances with the Tigers in 2022, tossing 3.2 scoreless innings.
Jack Lopez
Jack Lopez MiLB contract with Seattle
Tue, Jan 28, 2025, 9:07 AM
The Mariners signed Lopez to a minor-league contract Jan. 14.
Analysis: Lopez got into 27 games with the Angels in 2024, posting a .629 OPS. The 32-year-old is likely to begin the 2025 campaign at Triple-A Tacoma, where he'll give the Mariners some utility depth.
Will Klein
Will Klein Traded to Seattle
Tue, Jan 21, 2025, 4:21 PM
The Athletics traded Klein to the Mariners on Tuesday in exchange for international slot money.
Analysis: After the trade, Klein was added to Seattle's 40-man roster. The right-hander was designated for assignment Friday, but he had the tools to drive interest of other clubs. The Mariners will be the hard thrower's third ball club after beginning his career with the Royals.
Samad Taylor
Samad Taylor Outrighted to Triple-A
Tue, Jan 21, 2025, 1:07 PM
The Mariners outrighted Taylor to Triple-A Tacoma on Tuesday.
Analysis: He's no longer on the 40-man roster but will remain in the organization as utility depth. Taylor, 26, spent virtually all of the 2024 season at Triple-A Tacoma, where he collected a .732 OPS with 11 homers and 50 steals.
