Josh Fleming
Josh Fleming Re-signs with Seattle
Thu, Dec 19, 2024, 12:03 PM
The Mariners re-signed Fleming to a minor-league contract Thursday that includes an invitation to spring training, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports.
Analysis: Fleming began the 2024 season with the Pirates before finishing it at Triple-A Tacoma in the Mariners organization. The owner of a 4.77 ERA over parts of five major-league seasons, Fleming is likely headed back to Tacoma to start 2025 as some rotation depth for the Mariners.
Jacob Nottingham
Jacob Nottingham Latches on with Seattle
Wed, Dec 11, 2024, 12:11 PM
The Mariners signed Nottingham to a minor-league contract Tuesday.
Analysis: Nottingham, 29, spent the 2024 season in the Mexican League. The catcher has a career .698 OPS over parts of four big-league seasons and last saw action in the majors in 2021.
Matt Brash
Matt Brash Aiming for late April return
Wed, Nov 27, 2024, 11:07 AM
The Mariners are optimistic Brash (elbow) can make his 2025 season debut by the end of April, Adam Jude of the Seattle Times reports.
Analysis: Brash had an internal brace procedure on his right elbow in early May, so a return by April would be aggressive. However, he's been working out at the team's spring training complex in Arizona and is considered ahead of schedule in his recovery. Brash was dynamite out of Seattle's bullpen in 2023, posting a 3.06 ERA and 107:29 K:BB across 70.2 innings. Once healthy, he will serve in a leverage relief role for the Mariners.
Adonis Medina
Adonis Medina Catches on with Seattle
Sat, Nov 23, 2024, 10:45 PM
The Mariners signed Medina to a minor-league contract Monday, per the MiLB's transaction log.
Analysis: Medina spent the entire 2024 regular season with Triple-A Rochester where he posted a 3.76 ERA and 1.39 WHIP over 64.2 innings. The 27-year-old right-hander will presumably get a chance to earn a spot in the Mariners' bullpen during spring training.
Yunior Marte
Yunior Marte Inks minor-league deal with Seattle
Sat, Nov 23, 2024, 6:11 PM
The Mariners signed Marte (shoulder) to a minor-league contract Saturday that includes an invitation to spring training, Francys Romero of BeisbolFR.com reports.
Analysis: Marte spent the last two seasons with the Phillies' organization, and in 2024 he posted a 6.92 ERA and 1.88 WHIP over 26 innings in the majors. Marte was shut down from throwing in mid-September due to a right shoulder injury, but he should be fully healthy for spring training and will look to earn a spot in the Mariners' bullpen for the 2025 season.
JT Chargois
JT Chargois Designated for assignment
Tue, Nov 19, 2024, 8:15 PM
The Mariners designated Chargois for assignment Tuesday, Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: With Austin Shenton joining the organization Tuesday via a trade with the Rays, Chargois will end up as the odd man out of the Mariners' 40-man roster. The 33-year-old was extremely effective out of the bullpen in 2024, posting a 2.23 ERA and 1.02 WHIP across 36.1 total innings between Miami and Seattle, so there could be a handful of teams bidding for his services via waivers.
Austin Shenton
Austin Shenton Traded to Seattle
Tue, Nov 19, 2024, 8:07 PM
The Rays traded Shenton to the Mariners on Tuesday in exchange for cash, Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: After making his MLB debut and appearing in 19 games for the Rays in 2024, Shenton will now reunite with the organization that originally drafted him back in 2019. The 26-year-old infielder slashed .258/.361/.497 with 20 home runs and 65 RBI across 363 minor-league plate appearances last season, and he will likely remain an organizational depth piece upon moving to Seattle. JT Chargois was DFA'd in a corresponding move.
Casey Lawrence
Casey Lawrence Sticking with Mariners
Mon, Nov 18, 2024, 4:20 PM
The Mariners signed Lawrence to a minor-league contract Friday, per the MLB's transaction log.
Analysis: Lawrence participated in spring training for the Mariners this past March, and he'll likely do so again after agreeing to yet another minor-league deal with Seattle. The 37-year-old right-hander spent the entire 2024 regular season with Triple-A Tacoma, registering an 11-11 record over 29 starts with a 5.95 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 108:48 K:BB over 165 innings.
Jorge Polanco
Jorge Polanco Undergoes knee surgery
Thu, Oct 10, 2024, 4:42 PM
Polanco underwent surgery Thursday to repair the patellar tendon in his left knee, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Polanco had a career-worst .651 OPS in 2024 while playing through the knee issue, and he's now getting the injury addressed. The second baseman is expected to be ready for spring training, but it remains to be seen which uniform he will be donning in 2025 as the Mariners weigh a $12 million club option or $750,000 buyout.
Gregory Santos
Gregory Santos Wraps '24 with scoreless efforts
Mon, Sep 30, 2024, 12:08 PM
Santos, who was activated from the injured list last Monday, subsequently made two relief appearances during which he fired two scoreless innings while allowing one hit and recording one strikeout.
Analysis: Santos got back on the bump at the major-league level for the first time since July 31 when he earned his second hold with a scoreless seventh inning in the series opener against the Athletics on Friday. He logged one more frame during Sunday's regular-season finale, getting through the eighth inning on just nine pitches. It was a modest but encouraging season-ending sample for Santos, who didn't make his 2024 debut until July due to a lat strain and then missed nearly two months with a biceps injury. The hard-throwing right-hander played on a one-year deal this season, and it remains to be seen if the Mariners will want to take another look considering Santos logged all of 7.1 innings across eight appearances due to the injuries.
J.P. Crawford
J.P. Crawford Wraps season with multi-hit effort
Mon, Sep 30, 2024, 10:43 AM
Crawford went 2-for-3 with a run in a win over the Athletics on Sunday.
Analysis: Crawford posted one of two multi-hit efforts for the Mariners in the regular-season finale, ending what has been a tough campaign for him on a good note. The pair of knocks coaxed Crawford's batting average back over the Mendoza Line to .202, but all three components of his final batting line -- he also generated a .304 OBP and .321 slugging percentage -- qualified as career lows. The 29-year-old shortstop has been a fixture in Seattle since 2019 and is signed through the 2026 campaign, but he'll presumably need a notable uptick in production to hold on to his starting spot for another full season.
Cal Raleigh
Cal Raleigh Secures 100-RBI season with homer
Sun, Sep 29, 2024, 6:50 PM
Raleigh went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run and an additional run scored in Sunday's 6-4 win over the Athletics.
Analysis: Raleigh set the record for most homers by a catcher over his first four seasons when he went yard in the fifth inning. That blast was the margin of victory Sunday, and it also secured a 100-RBI campaign for the 27-year-old backstop. He finished the year with a .220/.312/.436 slash line, 34 homers, 73 runs scored, six stolen bases and 16 doubles over 153 games, though he hit a much more impressive .286 (28-for-98) in September while homering in four of his last seven games.
Logan Gilbert
Logan Gilbert Leads majors in innings
Sun, Sep 29, 2024, 6:47 PM
Gilbert (9-12) allowed one hit and struck out seven without walking a batter over 5.2 scoreless innings to earn the win Sunday over the Athletics.
Analysis: Gilbert was perfect into the sixth inning before Nick Allen hit a two-out single to end his day. Gilbert ends the regular season as the major-league leader in innings pitched with 208.2, two ahead of Kansas City's Seth Lugo. While he alternated between good and poor starts in September, Gilbert was generally one of the steadiest members of a strong Seattle rotation. He finished the campaign with a 3.23 ERA, led all major-league starters with a 0.89 WHIP and added a 220:37 K:BB over 33 starts, though he missed the 10-win mark for the first time in three years.
Emerson Hancock
Emerson Hancock Control issues in spot start
Sun, Sep 29, 2024, 9:11 AM
Hancock did not factor into the decision in Saturday's extra-inning win over the Athletics, allowing three earned runs on five hits and four walks over 5.1 innings. He struck out three.
Analysis: Hancock tossed only 56 of 93 pitches for strikes and generated a modest eight whiffs. He allowed a solo home run to Tyler Soderstrom to lead off the sixth inning before exiting a batter later, making it his longest outing at the big-league level since June 13. The right-hander shuttled between Seattle and Triple-A Tacoma this season, and he finished with a 4-4 mark, 4.75 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 39:19 K:BB across 60.2 big-league innings over 12 starts. Hancock posted better overall numbers in 16 starts with the Rainiers (6-3, 3.26 ERA, 1.27 WHIP), and he could get a chance to try and crack the major-league rotation again in spring training, although the M's aren't lacking for pitching depth.
Luke Raley
Luke Raley Swats game-tying homer
Sun, Sep 29, 2024, 8:39 AM
Raley went 2-for-3 with a double, a home run, a walk, two runs scored and three RBI in an extra-inning win over the Athletics on Saturday.
Analysis: Raley took Athletics closer Mason Miller deep to right center with one out and Julio Rodriguez aboard in the ninth inning to knot the score at 6-6 and force extras. It was the 22nd round tripper of Raley's first Mariners season, and it served as his sixth homer in a productive September that's also seen him post a .296 batting average and 1.001 OPS across 80 plate appearances (22 games).
Justin Turner
Justin Turner Sitting again Saturday
Sat, Sep 28, 2024, 7:02 PM
Turner is absent from Saturday's lineup against Oakland.
Analysis: Turner will sit for a second straight game Saturday. Jorge Polanco will serve as the designated hitter and bat fifth against A's right-hander Joey Estes.
Randy Arozarena
Randy Arozarena Not starting Saturday
Sat, Sep 28, 2024, 7:00 PM
Arozarena is not in the starting lineup for Saturday's game against the Athletics.
Analysis: Arozarena will get a breather Saturday after going 0-for-9 with six strikeouts over his last two starts. Victor Robles, Julio Rodriguez and Mitch Haniger will man the outfield for the Mariners.
Bryce Miller
Bryce Miller Done for season
Sat, Sep 28, 2024, 6:14 PM
The Mariners placed Miller on the 15-day injured list Saturday due to a blister on his right index finger.
Analysis: In his last appearance Monday against the Astros, Miller picked up his final win of the season as he allowed two hits and two walks while striking out five over seven scoreless innings. The 26-year-old right-hander ended the year strong with four quality starts in a row, and over the 12 games since the All-Star break, he posted a 1.89 ERA, 0.84 WHIP and 73:16 K:BB over 71.1 innings. Miller will finish the 2024 regular season with a 12-8 record over 31 starts with a 2.94 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 171:45 K:BB across 180.1 innings. Emerson Hancock was recalled from Triple-A Tacoma in a corresponding move, and he will start Saturday against the Athletics.
Emerson Hancock
Emerson Hancock Recalled from Tacoma
Sat, Sep 28, 2024, 6:08 PM
The Mariners recalled Hancock from Triple-A Tacoma on Saturday.
Analysis: Hancock has been recalled ahead of his start Saturday against the Athletics. He made his last start with the Mariners on Sept. 21 against the Rangers, when he allowed two runs on five hits while striking out three across five innings. Across 11 major-league outings this season, Hancock has a 4-4 record with a 4.72 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 36:15 K:BB across 55.1 innings.
Mitch Haniger
Mitch Haniger On base twice in Friday's start
Sat, Sep 28, 2024, 10:47 AM
Haniger, drawing his first start since Sept. 18, went 1-for-3 with a walk in a win over the Athletics on Friday.
Analysis: The veteran outfielder has been relegated to spot duty down the stretch, as Friday marked only his sixth turn with the starting nine since the calendar flipped to September. In his 2024 return to Seattle, Haniger hasn't been able to approximate the level of production he flashed during the height of his first Mariners tenure, and he's now gone 13 games without an extra-base hit.
